Partnering for Healthy Public Policy

CHALLENGE
The Healthy Communities Partnership of Hastings & Prince Edward is a network of local agencies, municipalities, and residents that are committed to working together to create settings that make healthy living part of our everyday lives, in our everyday settings. As the lead agency for the partnership, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health faced the challenge of developing collaborative partnerships to address municipal policy issues related to healthy eating and active living.
SOLUTION
The Circle of Health© was used to facilitate partnership development by structuring a workshop for community stakeholders to collectively explore the multiple dimensions of municipal policy for healthy eating and active living. The Circle of Health© gave participants a common understanding of health promotion that enabled them to explore the multiple strategies that were needed to achieve healthy public policy. It helped identify other potential partners, and was instrumental in clarifying shared values and specific determinants of health that needed to be addressed.
