Intersectoral Action for Health (AIPS)

CHALLENGE

Brazil, a country of 186 million inhabitants, is characterized by large disparities in health and well-being between rich and poor.  Health promotion strategies are viewed as essential to address the conditions of poverty, requiring intersectoral action and introduction of practical tools to engage stakeholders in planning and delivery of programs.

SOLUTION

In partnership with the Canadian Public Health Association, Intersectoral Action for Health (AIPS) was initiated in six Brazilian communities to promote social equity, sustainable local development, and alleviation of poverty. In 2008, the Circle of Health© was translated into Portuguese and quickly embraced by educators, public health professionals and community workers in this project as a practical tool for health promotion collaboration across sectors.
