Bringing About Change

CHALLENGE

Until 1997, when the Circle of Health© was introduced to Eastern Health, much of the health promotion focus in the region was on Health Education. To achieve improved health outcomes, management felt it was necessary to look more holistically at the determinants that affect health and to explore additional health promotion strategies as advocated by the Ottawa Charter.

SOLUTION

Eastern Health adopted the Circle of Health© to support a comprehensive approach to planning. Managers and staff in various departments used the framework to support the development and implementation of health promotion initiatives. By broadening the approach beyond health education, Eastern Health found opportunities to engage professionals and communities in new programs and achieve desired health outcomes.
